Choir & Music Group

The Choir

Music plays a large part in worship at Christchurch. The Choir exists primarily to lead the singing in church together with the Music Group and various instrumentalists who play in the services.

The Choir prepares the hymns for each week’s services. Sometimes they will sing new hymns to make them familiar to the congregation. The Choir regularly sings new anthems. In the last 18 months the Choir has in these ways helped the congregation to be familiar to the new hymn book.

The Choir presents various seasonal music, either on its own or with the Music Group.

The Choir has a very wide and varied repertoire, from older classic pieces such as John Stainer’s ‘Crucifixion’, which we presented with other local church choirs, to the more modern music of Roger Jones, William Lloyd-Webber and Christopher Tambling.

The Choir has also enjoyed leading Old Tyme Music Hall and pieces by Gilbert and Sullivan! If you enjoy singing why not come and share that enjoyment with us on a Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.

The Music Group

The Music Group has existed in Christchurch in various forms for some years. Some musicians playing in seasonal musicals with the Choir, others as a recorder group, others in concerts and special events.

At present the Group has established a regular pattern of playing for Sunday Services, with the Organ or on their own. They often play at new hymn evenings. The Group has thus contributed greatly to the Church learning of new hymns in our new hymn book.

We have a wide range of instruments and skills and enjoy playing together. Some of our members belong to other bands and orchestras and we are pleased to see them when they are able to attend services.

We usually practise Sunday morning an hour before the service. Fortunately our minister chooses the hymns early in the month enabling us to prepare ahead for the services.

We also have members who enjoy playing at festival services but are not able to commit a great deal of time to practising together. Although we would like to see them more often, we thoroughly enjoy playing with a large group on Christmas morning!
