What’s it all about?
Throughout Christchurch’s history we have almost always had a youth club run by volunteers from the church. After a short gap youth club was relaunched in 2010 and some of the same leaders continue to run it.
Friday nights are busy, full of fun and activities. We have adapted our style and approach over the years and the current format appears to be working well for our children and young people.
We have the use of two main spaces:
In our main hall we hold a large group game each week e.g. football, basketball, cricket and the children dip in and out of this throughout the night. We also have use of a table tennis table, pool table and table football in the hall.
In our side hall, the ‘quiet’ room hosts other activities including craft/colouring/jewellery, board games, card games and Lego as well as having our sofa and sensory area where there is opportunity to relax and unwind, and where we have resources such as sensory toys and noise-cancelling headphones for those who need this.
There are little fixed activities for the group and so children are able to choose which activities and areas they are interested in week by week. Joining the two rooms is our ever-popular tuckshop.
At the end we will run a game for all who wish to join in. This may be a competitive game of bulldogs (no physical contact involved!), quick-hockey, or a quieter challenge.
In the summer months we fling wide the doors and make use of our outside space where we play games such as volleyball, tennis and have a range of play equipment to enjoy outdoors.
Our volunteers offer support and encouragement to the young people during the evening and enjoy joining in games with them.
Children must be registered in advance, please get in touch with us for a link to register. We sadly cannot accept ‘walk-ins’ on the night who haven’t been registered.
